Mary Angela Comte Quilter, Marion area resident for over fifty years, died
Friday, January 8, 2010 in London, Ohio surrounded by her loving family.
Mary Angela was born April 30, 1921 in Toledo, Ohio to William Henry and
Anna Rose (Ochs) Comte. She spent her youth in Toledo and graduated from
DeSales College where she met the love of her life, Thomas N. Quilter. They
married August 21, 1944 at Holy Rosary Cathedral in Toledo.
as a Naval family, the Quilters lived in many ports of call around the US and in
Italy. Each of their six children were born in a different location. Tom and
Mary’s children include daughters Mary Patricia (John) Dervin, Elizabeth Anne
and Kathleen Helen Quilter (John) Wheeler. Sons include Thomas Matthew
(Connie), Michael Comte and William James (Wenda). She was blessed with
fourteen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.
In addition, Mary Angela is survived by her brother, Robert (Marge) Comte and
sister-in-law, Jeanette (Bouy) Quilter. She was preceded in death by her parents;her husband in 2006; daughter Kathleen in 1981 and her brothers Bill andFrank Comte.A devout Catholic, Mary Angela was a member of St. Mary’s Parish for sixdecades. She volunteered countless hours for many community services,including Marion General Hospital’s Twig III, St. Mary’s and Marion CatholicSchool and Meals on Wheels. Together, Mary and Tom received the 2005 SpecialService Award from the Marion Area Chamber of Commerce.
In 1971, the couple began a dream of growing grapes, later producing wine at
Shamrock Vineyard, near Waldo, which opened in 1984. Over the years, they
contributed to the development of the Ohio wine industry, earning awards for
their wines. In 2004, they were jointly inducted into the Ohio Wine Producers’Hall of Fame.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to St. Mary Church,Marion Catholic High School, the TWIG at Marion General Hospital, Loving CareHospice of London, Ohio or to a charity of the donor’s choice




Family will receive friends from 5 - 7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 12, 2010 in the Funeral Home.  A funeral mass will be held in St. Mary Church, 251 N. Main Street, Marion, Ohio, at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 13, 2010 with Fr. Michael Nimocks, and Fr. Dan Sullivan and Fr. Ted Sill Con-Celebrants.  Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery, Marion, Ohio.
