George Martin

George W. Martin age 83 passed peacefully at Hillcrest Rehabilitation Hospital on Monday, March 15, 2010. He resided in Denver, Colorado with his wife of 57 years, Hilda (Hofer) Martin. George was born on May 26, 1926 in East Liverpool, Ohio, the oldest son of Howard R. and Esther (Walker) Martin.

He graduated from East Liverpool H.S. in 1944, immediately joining the Navy Air Corp, where he served from 1944-1946 as a tail gunner. Home from the war, he graduated from the Ohio State University. While There, he was a  four year, All American rifleman 1947-1950, and finished as a national champion. He was recently recognized and inducted onto the OSU Hall of Fame for these achievements. He was employed at Remington Arms Company where he worked for 35 years. While at Remington, he performed many demonstrations of trick shooting, marksmanship, and safe rifle handling for the Boy Scouts of America.

George is survived by his wife Hilda (Hofer) Martin, who has moved and made a home with George in six states. Also surviving are his sister, M. Kay (Don) Evans, his younger brother Howard R. (Doris) Martin Jr., and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. 





Funeral services will be on Saturday, March 20, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. in the Gunder/Hall & Folk Funeral Directors, 347 W. Center Street, Marion , Ohio, with Fr. Michael Nimocks Celebrant.  Friends may call at the time of the service.  Burial will follow in St Mary's Cemetery with military honors conducted by Marion County United Veterans Council.
